Now that I’ve signed up for La Ruta, the 3 day mountain bike race from the Pacific to the Caribbean in Costa Rica, I have to start learning how to ride a bike again and gain some level of fitness! Most of the tourism places in Bonito rent mountain bikes and after finding one for $12 a day I was off on a mission to get dirty.

I was only 7km out of town standing against a fence photographing smaller birds when 2 huge parrots flew right by my head, did a loop around me and then settled on the fence four feet from where I was standing. I had never seen a Red-and-Green Macaw and a Blue-and-Gold Macaw together before and having them so close to me was pretty special.

Perfect!

Hadn’t noticed before but the Blue-and-Gold Macaw is considerably smaller than its Red-and-Green cousin

Just after this shot he flew off with the damn thing in his beak. Now I have to explain to the rental company how a macaw stole the reflector!

I couldn't believe they were so close
